News - Wales Opens With A Win

Posted: 6 September 2008

Wales opened the 2010 FIFA World Cup account with a 1-0 over Azerbaijan at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff this afternoon (Saturday).

The all important goal came just seven minutes from time after a goal-mouth scramble. Substitute Sam Vokes (Wolverhampton Wanderers) getting the final touch.

Earlier, Jason Koumas had missed a penalty for Wales, in a game that they dominated for long periods without making inroads into a stubborn Azeri defence. Indeed, goalkeeper Kamaran Agayev was probably the man of the match between the two sides.

Match statistics can be found in the results section. Wales now plays Russia in Moscow on Wednesday.

Afterwards, manager John Toshack said: 'I am delighted with the win, which I think we fully deserved on the play over 90 minutes. Azerbaijan were well organised, as I knew they would be under manager Bertie Vogts, but after they had a player (Fabio Luis Ramin) sent off I felt things would go our way."
